Kahanna Montrese Talks ‘Drag Race’ Season 11

In week two of Season 11 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, the contestants start out saying goodbye to Soju and then Ru walks in and informs the gurls that the mini challenge will be stealing the spotlight in a celebrity photo bomb. They have 15 minutes to get into quick drag. The winners were Brooke and Silky, who each received $1,000 Gift Certificate from Fierce Queens. For the Maxi challenge the two teams (captained by the winners) will each be starring in an all-drag queen cast film.

Brooke’s team (Nina, Ra’jah, Honey, Shuga, Plastique and Ariel) had the movie “Why It Got To Be Black….Panther?” and Silky’s team (A’keria, Vangie, Mercedes, Yvie, Kahanna and Scarlet) had the movie “Good God Girl, get Out.”

The guest judges were Sydelle Noel (Black Panther) and Bobby Moynihan (Saturday Night Live) and the runway look was “Whats Your Zodiac Sign.”

In the end there was a tie for the win to Scarlet and Yvie and they each won a $2,500 gift card to Crème Shop. The bottom two were Kahanna and Mercedes and Kahanna sashayed away.

At what age did drag become an interest and how did you pick your name?

I was 18 when I first stepped into drag. I came up with Khanna because I wanted a name that was exotic, and it sounded Hawaiian. I got my last name form my drag mom, Coco.

Speaking of your mom, she is RuPaul royalty—did she give you any advice?

She was very supportive during the whole process and she said to me to be myself and to know there is no one else like me and stay true to that.

How many times did you apply to be on RuPaul’s Drag Race? How did it feel when you found out you got chosen?

I auditioned twice: for season 10 and 11. When I got the call it felt super validating and I was very excited about it.

Tell us about your RuPaul’s Drag Race experience?

The whole process was a chance for me to learn who I am and to evolve. I took away growth and how to really elevate my drag. It was an amazing experience. What I got back from the experience is more than I think I would get from a lifetime of doing drag.

Is there something you wish you did different and or is there a certain look you wish we could have all seen?

I wish I would have prioritized before I went on the show a little better. It’s one of those things that needs your full attention and I wasn’t able to do that.

My street fighter look was sickening, and I wish I could have shown that.

What’s your marital status?

I am single and available for the boys.

Now that you’re out of the running, who do you want to win?

I love Silky a lot but if I had to pick one, I would pick Yvie. She has such a good soul and her drag is something we haven’t seen before.

Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you.

That I am really introverted, and drag has helped me to become outgoing.

What’s ahead for Kahanna?

Lots of stuff coming up—music videos, etc. I am very excited about performing around the world.
