A’Whora Talks ‘Drag Race UK’ Experience

A'Whora / VH1

Ru comes in and tells the British Queens that the mini challenge will be to serve your best Macho Drag as they compete in the newest singing show sensation: The Masked for Masked Singer. She tells the queens to give their best butch performance of Ru’s own song “Hey Kitty Girl.” They have 15 minutes to get into Macho Drag, and the winner of the mini challenge is Ellie Diamond who gets to choose the order of the Maxi challenge, which is stand-up comedy celebrating the theme of love. They will be performing in front of a live audience of inanimate objects (since it is Covid times).

On the main stage joining Ru, Michelle, and Alan is the legendary British comedian Dawn French. On the runway the category is “Stoned on the Runway: Dripping in Jewels.” In the end the winner was Bimini Bon Boulash with A’Whora and Tayce in the bottom two. This week was a rare occasion where I totally disagree with Ru, as she sent A’Whora sashaying away. The reason I disagree, is A’Whora’s  runway look was amazing and she had the better of the two lip synch’s. This is no disrespect to Tayce, who I love, but fair is fair!

In any case, I totally enjoyed interviewing A’Whora for this exclusive Hotspots interview:

Q: At what age did drag become an interest and how did you pick your name?

A: I started getting into drag around season 2 of Drag Race. I loved Raven, was 16 and I was obsessed. I got my drag name form a bad relationship. I was club kid and dressed up. My boyfriend at the time said I was too feminine and thought I looked slutty, so hecalled me a whore. I used his negative energy and turned it into something positive: A’Whora. I wanted to prove to him that being feminine was not a bad thing. I now have a successful career, so I showed him!

Q: How exciting was it to be chosen for the second season of Drag Race UK?

A: It was an amazing thing to even be considered, especially after the huge success of season. I felt incredibly lucky, and it was a great amount of validation.

Q. How hard was it to keep the secret that you were on Drag Race?

A: It’s always hard especially when you are living with one of the other contestants.

Q: Tell us about your RuPaul’s Drag Race UK experience?

A: It was amazing, and it was a dream come true. It was also very stressful and very long days, but it was definitely worth it in the end.

Q: Is there something you wish you had done differently?

A: I wish I had taken some stand-up comedy classes beforehand.

A: Your design aesthetic is amazing. I know you went to school, but were you always fashionable?

A: I have always had that niche, but I thought it was going to be in the direction of Interior design. However, I took a turn into fashion because growing up I was obsessed with Lady GaGa. I think fashion is empowering and you can say a thousand words by just walking down he street.

Q: What’s your marital status?

A: I am married to Tayce…just kidding. I am single and right now I am not looking for anything, as I want to enjoy my independence and success.

Q: Who are you closest with from the show?

A: I am very close with Bimini and Tayce. I also have close relationships with Lawrence, Ellie.

Q: What’s ahead for you?

A: I would love to tackle the fashion industry and really break boundaries. I want to create lingerie for men to look like women: for the queens. I also want my fashion to break boundaries.
