The spectacular life of the iconic Aretha Franklin comes to the big screen in her new biopic, RESPECT. While her activism is centered in the movie, her allyship has not been forgotten by her LGBTQ+ fans. The title song became anthemic in its time for anyone demanding a little respect, which included Black people fighting for their civil rights and any oppressed group ready to be heard. It’s easy to see why queer people have related to it, and Miss Franklin, so much over the years. In the opening sequence, Aretha’s father asks her to sing and in the crowd are 2 men visibly flirting with each other.
