Why Some Churches Are Leaving Their Denomination Over LGBTQ+ Issues

Around 200 United Methodist churches in Western North Carolina are expected to leave the denomination due to LGBTQ+ issues.

This disaffiliation is part of a larger division within Christianity regarding the acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals in terms of ordination, marriage, and spiritual standing. The Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church is anticipated to approve the departure of 192 congregations. North Carolina has one of the highest rates of Methodist disaffiliation in the United States, with nearly a third of its Methodists having already left by January. The situation is similar in Texas, where half of the state’s congregations claim to have disaffiliated from their respective denominations.
