Ninety-three years ago on July 21, 1930, the creation of the U.S. Department of Veterans Administration forever changed how Americans cared for our veterans after their active service was completed.  To celebrate that commitment, ArtServe is opening a new exhibit coinciding with the Veterans Administration’s 93rd anniversary called “Veterans: A Family Perspective.”  The exhibit concludes on Monday, September 11 in tribute to first responders and other veterans of America’s worst terrorist attack.  The exhibit officially opens with a free, public reception today at ArtServe (1350 E. Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale) from 6 to 9pm.

Riverwalk Tacos & Tequila Fest takes place from 2-6 pm at Esplanade Park. Indulge in mouthwatering tacos from the area’s best food trucks and restaurants while enjoying refreshing cocktails and lively music!

The Adrienne Arsht Center will host its inaugural Art + Mind Day presented by Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, a free event focused on the power that the arts have to inspire, heal and restore the mind and body from noon to 5pm. Art + Mind Day will include free interactive arts workshops, demonstrations and performances designed to enhance well-being using self-expression as a creative outlet to convey emotions and release stress.

Phantasmagoria: A Dream, an experimental performance art piece inspired by Dada and Jungian psychology takes place at the Center for Spiritual Living Ft. Lauderdale (4849 Dixie Highway Oakland Park) at 8pm. An exploration of the unconscious mind through dream-logic. Music, dance, visual imagery, and dialogue. 60 minutes, no intermission. Join the Bears of South Florida at the movies at AMC Coral Ridge at 1pm where they reserved an entire theater. Tickets are $16 and must be purchased in advance at bosfl.org . Seating will be assigned at the door. There will be a meet-up at Rosie’s at 4pm following the movie.

Storks presents this month’s artist, Jose Silva, on the walls and for sale from today through August 20. Jose Silva grew up in Venezuela and always had an inclination for the visual artsy which he started developing from a very young age where his parents encouraged his artistic abilities for drawing, painting, and sculpting. After graduating high school, he moved to the United States looking to make a career and find better opportunities. He attended the Art institute of Fort Lauderdale and got his degree in Visual Effects and Motion Graphics. He’s been in the film industry ever since.

Compass’ July Pride Business Alliance social will be from 6-8 pm at Rohi’s Readery. This social justice children’s bookstore has been promoting and celebrating diversity and inclusion, and that is why Pranoo Kumar and Rohi’s Readery were recognized at the Stonewall Ball with the Guiding Light Award. This bookstore and learning center are located in The Square at 600 S Rosemary Ave #162, West Palm Beach. They will also have a fun Voter Photo Booth onsite coordinated by Rudolph Galindo to encourage folks to register to vote. Plays Of Wilton announces a new division called WOW! Women Of Wilton and are announcing their first big show, Last Summer at Bluefish Cove, starring 8 super-talented actresses starting today. They have a great award-winning director, Nicole Stodard, and an incredible, landmark, ground-breaking script. NSU Art Museum announced its latest exhibition Future Past Perfect debuting today (preview on the 29…free for members and $20 for nonmembers).  Future Past Perfect will unveil the captivating works of seven South Florida-based emerging artists in their first-ever museum show and explores the profound impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on emerging artists careers and their artistic practices.  Experienced collectively, these solo exhibitions will demonstrate how these seven artists confronted their fears of the unknown, grappled with the tragic consequences of the pandemic, and explored themes such as politics, migration, global warming, and social justice. The 2nd annual PrideFête, An LGBTQ+ Caribbean Festival takes place at Richardson Historic Park and Nature Preserve from 6pm to 11pm on Saturday, August 12. The Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (MDGLCC) announced today that it is rebranding to become MDGLCC, The Greater Miami LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce. The new name reflects the organization’s commitment to inclusivity and expanding its reach to serve the entire LGBTQ and allied community in the Greater Miami area.
