Ron DeSantis Anti DEI Law Forces Florida University LGBTQ+ Centers To Shut Down

The University of North Florida (UNF) is in the news for significant changes that have occurred due to a recent Anti-DEI legislative decision. UNF has shut down several of its vital centers, including those dedicated to LGBTQ+, intercultural, interfaith, and women’s issues. This decision comes as a response to Governor Ron DeSantis’s 2023 law, which prohibits publicly-funded universities from allocating funds towards diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. Among the affected centers is the LGBTQ Center, a cornerstone of support and advocacy that has served the university community for 18 years. Its closure, just seven days before graduation, underscores the abruptness of the decision and its impact on students and staff alike. DeSantis’s words while signing this law were, “DEI is better viewed as standing for ‘discrimination, exclusion, and indoctrination,’ and that has no place in our public institutions.” Critics argue that this law defines DEI programs in a manner that could hinder efforts to address issues of discrimination and inequality. Moreover, the closure of these centers risks tarnishing UNF’s reputation as a champion of diversity and inclusion. Previously recognized as one of the best LGBTQ+-inclusive campuses in the state by Campus Pride, UNF now faces scrutiny over its commitment to fostering a diverse and welcoming environment. Carlos Guillermo Smith, a former Florida House Democrat and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, condemned the anti-DEI law, labeling it “a rubber stamp for Ron DeSantis’s agenda of censorship and surveillance.” LGBTQ+ advocates suggest this is just the first of many Florida colleges and universities that will follow The University of North Florida’s actions.
