Our Hotspots Happening Out LGBTQ lifestyle magazine Hotspots has a new feature on Cirque du Soleil’s wildly imaginative show OVO. The world-famous and queer loved Cirque du Soleil will return to South Florida this August, and for one of its star performers, it’s a heartfelt homecoming.
Ernesto Lea Place, an openly gay acrobat originally from Argentina, moved to Florida as a teen and now returns as part of one of the world’s most iconic productions. Created 15 years ago, OVO—which means “egg” in Portuguese—has been reimagined with new costumes, dazzling acrobatics, and an enchanting story of a vibrant insect colony.
The show will run at the Kaseya Center in Miami from August 14 to 17, and at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise from August 20 to 24. In a recent interview with Hotspots Happening Out Media President Scott Holland, Ernesto Lea Place opened up about his journey from learning ballet in Daytona Beach to finding freedom and expression through performance.
After being spotted performing with his partner at a festival in Italy, Lea Place joined Cirque just over a year ago. He describes OVO as magical:
“The costumes, the lighting, the acrobatics are all magical, and everyone who comes to see it walks away a little bit happier than when they came.”
