When Josh Sorbe, a gay Democratic Senate press secretary, saw The Atlantic’s report on the staggering failure rate among new Immigration and Customs Enforcement recruits, he decided to prove a point with his running shoes. In a video now circulating widely online, Sorbe breezed through the ICE physical fitness test, 15 push-ups, 32 sit-ups, and a 1.5-mile run in just 12 minutes and 19 seconds, faster than the time allowed for the run alone.
Sorbe told The Advocate, “I read the test and I was like, one, I know I can do this. Two, it’s a good opportunity to show what the reforms within ICE under [Secretary] Kristi Noem really look like — and get people talking.” In the clip, Sorbe joked, “MAGA is so desperate to villainize immigrants that they’re willing to try to let anyone become an ICE agent…Immigrants make America really f***ing great.” Sorbe informed that his ICE Agent Challenge has already inspired others in his D.C. fitness classes. He said, “Democrats are fit, Democrats are hot…It’s about principles and performance — MAGA performs, but we actually deliver.”
