A California-Based Coffee Chain Has Ordered The Removal Of Pride Flags From Its Stores

Philz Coffee, which operates locations across California and Chicago, recently directed stores to take down Pride flags and other LGBTQ+ decor. CEO Mahesh Sadarangani (Suh-duh-run-GAA-nee) confirmed the move, describing it as a visual change rather than a shift in company values. The decision has drawn criticism from patrons and allies who view the removal as a step away from visible queer support. In response, a petition is launched on Change.org, reportedly by baristas, calling on the company to reinstate Pride flags across all locations. Since becoming public, the campaign has gathered more than 6,700 signatures, reflecting growing dissatisfaction with the company’s decision. Philz Coffee has not issued additional comments beyond its initial statement.
