La Gran Colombia era una especie de liga de países recién independizados de España, formado por las actuales Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela y Panamá. En 1925 y tras sufrir las presiones que Panamá ejercía sobre la comarca, cansados por la imposición de tributos y leyes muy restrictivas e injustas, los indígeneas Kuma se sublevaron contra Panamá.La revuelta acabó con la firma de un acuerdo por el cual la comarca conservaría gran parte de su propia autonomía con el fin de preservar su cultura ancestral, sus raíces y tradiciones que se habían mantenido intactas a lo largo de los siglos.
Los Gunas han conseguido preservar su identidad cultural, han conseguido preservar sus selvas y sus playas, protegiendo su legado de las grandes empresas hoteleras y madereras, preservando lo que pudiera ser el último paraíso terrenal.
