Milancita is a well known name in the club scene in south Florida and especially in Miami. She has promoted for Discotekka, Score, Boardwalk, Living Room, Azucar and the infamous O’Zone. What people don’t know about Milancita is that she takes an active role in the community and has been involved in many fundraisers as well as with the United Coalition. It was my pleasure to sit down and interview one of south Florida’s finest, Milancita.

You are one of the biggest promoters in South Florida, but some people don’t know you started out as a photographer. At what age did you start having an interest in photography?

When I was fairly young I took an interest in photography but never dreamed it would evolve into all that it did. When I began taking pictures it was for family and friends and eventually people suggested I look into a career in photography as I got older and that is how a hobby became a career.

When did photography become a business for you?

Well, it became a business in the Miami community when Paulina Rubio showed up at Bongos the night that Thalia was performing to a gay audience. The rumors flew about how one was there to take the spotlight away from the other and how it all happened… but guess what? I had the pictures!

How did the website Milancita.com come about?

The website idea came from people asking to see their pictures and asking me to email the pictures to them. When the demand grew and simply became too much, the idea of marketing them on my own website came to mind. The hits on the site grew more and more week after week and eventually reached the success that Milancita.com is today.

What made you interested in promotions?

Promoting is something that I have always had inside of me. I feel that as someone who likes to represent her community with pride and dignity, I have really been promoting the gay lifestyle all of my life.

What was your first promotion?

Like I said before, promoting the gay lifestyle has been a lifelong journey for me. I believe it is important for people to know what we are really about and not just let themselves be guided by the stereotypes that are often portrayed on television. People need to know that the gay community is an active, successful, intelligent community that has so much to offer.

You recently started doing a very successful lesbian Friday night. How is that different from promoting to the boys?

The entire approach is different. As a promoter you must know who your clients are and what their wants and needs are. I tailor my work to make sure I continue to meet and exceed those expectations. I won’t say too much more – can’t give away all the secrets!

Tell me something that people don’t know about Milancita?

I think people don’t know that my biggest satisfaction doesn’t come from being a promoter. It genuinely comes from knowing that I am part of a community that not only comes together for amazing parties, like the ones held at Discotekka on Friday and Saturday nights, but also comes together as one to help each other and those that live around us. I truly love to see members of the LGBT community out collecting canned food for the homeless, doing a carwash to raise funds for children’s shelters, fundraising for breast cancer, walking for a cure against HIV/AIDS… those are the things that satisfy me and make me feel accomplished. I know I will continue to work in whichever way I can so that our community will become even more united and make an even bigger impact on society.

What’s ahead for Milancita??

Great things are ahead for my friends, me and all of the Miami LGBT community!

Discotekka invites the entire community to come out and celebrate Milancita’s birthday on Saturday, December 5th. The theme will be Santeria and, according to Vegas and the girls, the shows are going to be off the chain!
