At what age did you realize you wanted to be a performer and how did this come about?
If you ask my mom I came singing and dancing out of the delivery room! My love of performing and storytelling started very early despite growing up in a sports-minded family. I had some great teachers in grade school who pointed out to my parent’s maybe they should get me in some music lessons or acting classes. Thankfully my parents encouraged all our interests so my locker was often stuffed with my violin, lacrosse equipment and a script for a school play.
You started your professional career in music, what made you switch over to hosting and acting?
Actually they all happened organically together. During high school I was touring with musicals, working at the local TV station and competing in festivals with one act plays. At that time it was really just a matter of learning and doing as much in entertainment as I could. During my three years of high school I generally only went to school about three or four days a week. I was living part time in another city from the age of sixteen since I was on contract there. I think over the years I’ve found my passion in TV and film but I still very much appreciate music and the stage. I’m still finding my way and expanding my experiences through writing, producing and directing which is ultimately very rewarding for me.
I think most people really became aware of you from “Dante’s Cove.” How was it to work on that series and how was it to portray a normal monogamous gay relationship?
That’s hilarious. I’m not sure there was anything normal about “Dante’s Cove!” We really had a great time as a cast on that show. We were working in beautiful locations like Hawaii and Grand Turk and throwing pretend fireballs at each other. As young guys and gals in our twenties it was a ridiculous and fun job. Lots of fans really became attached to the relationship between Toby and Kevin played by Gregory Michael. I think we had created a special bond on and off the show. There was chemistry and it showed.
Your newest movie Judas Kiss is coming out on DVD in a few days. This was definitely an interesting part, what attracted you to it?
The concept of meeting and having the opportunity to influence your younger self was definitely intriguing. Going back in time to change your present is something I’m sure many of us have contemplated. Maybe not having sex with your younger self, but geez isn’t that what makes indie gay film so ridiculously entertaining?
Working with handsome and talented young actors like Richard Harmon, Timo Descamps, and Sean Paul Lockhart kept me on my toes too.
What has been your favorite acting gig so far?
Playing Toby on “Dante’s Cove” was challenging because of the suspension of disbelief required on that show. At the same time it was so fun playing a role over three seasons and growing those relationships was really special. Making movies is awesome, but it’s a shorter amount of time. With a television series there’s continuity to your friendships and alter ego.
What qualities does the perfect man have?
Oh gosh! Who knows?! If you find him send him my way. Let’s see, trustworthy, driven, passionate, romantic, a leader, and, of course, funny. That all works for me!
What would people be surprised to know about you?
My life has been pretty open so I’m not sure I have too many secrets. Maybe that despite being the luckiest guy on the planet to travel to so many amazing destinations with my travel show Bump I’m secretly craving some serious normalcy. Having a man to spend my time with, to grow chickens with and raise broccoli on a little farm in Saskatchewan.
What’s ahead for Charlie David?
I am directing a documentary on HIV + youth this fall. It’s been incredibly emotional and educational. I’ve realized how my own education on HIV and AIDS essentially stopped in high school. The stories these young people are sharing are incredibly brave and so important in eradicating this stigma. I feel so fortunate in my work to meet such diverse human stories. It’s therapeutic for all of us to listen and to talk about the hard stuff sometimes.
