1) When did you realize that you wanted to sing for a living?

Probably at 4 or 5 years old as I was a little munchkin running around saying I was going to be a rock and roll star. In those days, the radio played everywhere; in the backyards, the kitchens, etc, so when I heard the radio I sang. My first real impression of an artist was of Stevie Wonder and from then on I was hooked.

2) How did it feel the first time you heard your song on the radio?

It wasn’t as impactful to me as it is for other singers, but I know I was driving in my car….and it was before I was singing under the name Taylor Dayne.

3) You have recorded so many songs, what are your favorites and why?

I remember hearing “Love Will Lead You Back” with Clive Davis and I thought “WOW!” However, my favorite thing is not recording, but rather singing live!

4) Who were/are your inspirations in the music industry?

Whitney Houston was as she was a label mate and I remember saying to my production partner like a year later that she was an inspiration with her beautiful instrument and she made a song sellable with incredible range.

The radio was an inspiration; it got me through all the hard times.

5) In 1990 you worked with Diane Warren, one of the most talented song writers of our generation. Tell me about that experience?

I am humbled to say she was stalking me before 1990, but she got 3 songs on my album that year. You don’t so much as work with her as she is a force of nature so you stay out of the way and let her do what she does and be happy she wants to work with you. She has an incredible gift and ability to position words and songwriting.

6) In 2010 you lobbied congressional leaders on Capitol Hill on behalf of NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) and VH1’s Save The Music Foundation to reduce the cuts in music education in America Schools. When did you get involved with these organizations and how important are these issues to you?

I’m informed enough in the music industry and as a mom to know that the first thing that goes is the arts and its super important to reverse these cutbacks. I know the impact of going to choir or playing an instrument as sometimes you dabble in something and you find a different way to speak.

The federal government passes these issues.

7) You have toured all over the world, what has been your favorite gig and favorite city?

I can’t pick my favorite gig as there have been so many. As far as cities there are numerous favorite cities. I just spent a month in Australia and it was hard for me with 2 kids, but I did love it! I also love New York, San Fran and New Orleans!

8) Your talent and brand has sustained over 20 years. How do you continue to entertain your fan base and how do you engage new fans?

You entertain yourself by writing new material and that translates into entertaining your fans. Lately I have been a little more edgy and urban, even a little more techno flavored as I think that is the current trend.

9) In addition to singing, you are an actress that has appeared on television, on Broadway and in feature films. How is acting different from singing?

It definitely keeps it fun, especially just being on a reality cooking show. I was the underdog and it was so much fun and creative. I am so happy I did it. Cooking is as creative as writing a song will ever be. It’s definitely art!

10) What would people be shocked to know about you?

I am a nature girl and I love hiking and outdoor activities. I have done nature activities all over the country. Also, Sundays are family day; my quiet day with my family.

11) What’s ahead for Taylor Dayne?

I love working, I love all aspects of it and I get excited for new projects. I am looking at a side business right now. I am also currently recording and just finished re-mastering my greatest hits.

Catch Taylor Dayne singing live on the PrideFest stage at Holiday Park/War Memorial Auditorium on Sunday March 11 at 6 pm.
