Week 11 of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 5 brought the mini challenge “BitchFest, Puppet Style,” which Alaska won and had a 15 second advantage retrieving Candy for the main challenge which was the Sugar Ball. The Sugar Ball had 33 categories: Super Duper 16, Sugar Momma (Executive Realness) and Candy Couture (Edible Eleganza). The judges said Alaska won the main challenge and Roxxxy was safe (although I think Roxxxy should have won for her Candy Couture alone), which meant Detox and Jinkx were in the bottom 2. Jinkx killed the lip synch for your life and it was time for the very entertaining Detox to Sashay away.
At what age did female impersonation become an interest & how did you pick your name?
I always crossed dressed when I was younger, but when I moved back to Orlando, when I was 16 or 17, I saw my first drag show and became mesmerized by Danielle Hunter, Sierre Fox, Nazhoni, and Miss Cori and decided this was what I wanted to do.
I wanted to call myself Ditta, but I was young and immature and got drunk a lot so my friends started calling me Detox and it stuck.
How many times did you apply to be on RPDR and how did it feel when you found out you got chosen?
This was my 3rd time auditioning and I made it close both times before. When I found out that I was chosen this year I was like “Finally,” but I did feel like this was the right time for me.
Tell me about your RuPaul’s Drag Race experience?
It was the most fun and most stressful thing I have ever done. It was so much work and I would go home every day and sit and my bathtub and cry. But it has opened up so many more doors for me and I have made so many close lifelong friends.
Is Rolaskatox still close?
We are still just as close as ever. The entire cast is pretty close except for one or 2 girls.
I heard through the grapevine that you were dating Roxxxy, is this true?
No, we never were and never will be. We are just very good friends.
Who do you want to win?
I want Roxxxy to win, because she is my sister and she has worked her ass off to get where she is. Although, I would be happy if any of the 3 wins as they are all super talented.
Tell me about the man behind Detox?
Matthew is exhausted and over Drag, but he no longer has a life which is fine because Detox is so much fun! The truth is I am the same person in and out of drag, but I get away with more in drag.
Tell me something people would be surprised to know about you.
I have a twin brother (fraternal), and he is straight.
What’s ahead for Detox?
I am releasing a new single with Willam and Vicky on May 6th. We are also in the process of starting a new play before the end of the year.
I am trying to quit smoking and get healthier but that seems impossible to do on the road.
My life will consist of lots of music, touring the world, and lots of fun drag.
