Slava’s Snowshow once again Blows into the Arsht Center

Often described as a cross between Cirque du Soleil and Blue Man Group, Slava’s Snowshow is an awe-inducing theatrical experience and a profoundly moving spectacle full of wondrous images, delightful comedy, haunting music and snow—lots and lots of snow. Created by Slava, the original Cirque clown genius, Slava’s Snowshow has stage effects that will blow you away (almost literally). Winner of multiple theatrical awards, Slava’s Snowshow has been hailed by The Independent as “an unmistakably unique, unmissable comedy masterpiece.”

“With the success of our prior summer shows, such as The Donkey Show, Cirque Eloize iD and Fuerza Bruta, the Arsht Center has now established a tradition of offering fun, unforgettable and stunning entertainment throughout the summer months that appeals to all ages, tastes and preferences,” said Arsht Center President and CEO John Richard. “This year, the international phenomenon SLAVA’S SNOWSHOW promises to bring back memories for the 30,000 who loved it in 2008 and make new memories for all who will enjoy this spectacle for the first time this summer.”

Presented by the Adrienne Arsht Center and CAMI Spectrum by special arrangement with SLAVA and Gwenael Allan, Slava’s Snowshow was inspired by the most famous mime artists of all time, including Charlie Chaplin, Marcel Marceau and Engibaro, Slava has dedicated his life since the age of 17 to re-claiming and re-establishing the art and craft of the true clown. After founding his own theater company “Litsedei” in 1979, Slava has taken clowning out of the circus and into the streets, and from there to the major theaters around the world. Produced by David J. Foster and Ross Mollision, Slava’s Snowshow now returns to Miami following sold-out engagements in Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Barcelona, Madrid, London, New York and a record-breaking run at the Arsht Center five years ago.

I was fortunate enough to sit down with Andrew Goldberg, Vice President of Marketing at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts for a chat about Slava’s Snowshow and the Arsht Center’s Summer Series.

1) How did Slava’s Snowshow originally come to the Arsht Center?

In the fall of 2007 Scott Shiller came to the Arsht Center and he leads our programming events. He scours the world for the best of what is out there. He found Slava’s Snowshow and thought it would be perfect for the Miami audience and to open our new Summer Series in 2008.

2) Were you surprised on how well it did in 2008?

I think other people were surprised, but we weren’t. Before 2008 the conventional wisdom was to stay away from big programming in the summer, and we didn’t think this was true anymore but we were cautiously optimistic. It was our first big summer show that came to the center and disproved the myth that no one is here during the summer. More than 30,000 people came to see the show. It paved the way for us to bring big blockbusters in the summer time.

3) Slava’s Snowshow is part of your Summer Series. Tell me more about the Summer Series?

We have a lot going on in our Summer Series; shows such as 8Cho and the summer shorts produced by the City Theater and a few others such as the International Hispanic Theater Festival. On August 3^rd we have a free performance of Ailey Camp Miami. We bring in 100 children for camp programs for six weeks. They learn Alvin Ailey choreography and at the end they perform. It is really incredible to see.

4) For people that haven’t seen Slava’s Snowshow, what should they expect?

It’s a visual spectacle as there is no spoken word, therefore it crosses all languages. Often times described as a cross between Cirque Du Soleil and Blue Man Group. It appeals to audiences of all ages, from 8 to 88 as it affects people on different levels. The children seem to like the humor and the adults seem to love the sophistication of it and the stories behind each vignette.

There will be a blizzard in the theater as your hair will be blown back….it’s a big extravaganza of a show and the sales are so good so far that we anticipate full houses again.

5) What made you bring it back now in 2013?

It was so popular in 2008 that people came to see it multiple times when it was here. We have gotten so many requests over the years to bring it back and we felt it was the right time now that five years have passed.
