I can’t believe it was over seven years ago that we heard the rumblings of a new gay club opening in downtown Miami that was going to be gay on Saturdays. I remember how excited everyone was and how we could not wait to see it. Seven years later, Discotekka is still going strong, and it was a pleasure to sit down with owner Joe Marcella and managers Alyson Thomas, Milancita and Danny Villar for this exclusive Hotspots interview only weeks before they celebrate their seventh anniversary.

How did Discotekka come about?

disco_3We started small. We were the new kids on the downtown block trying to make a party that would last a lifetime. Almost overnight, everyone knew where we were and what we had to offer, and to this day we haven’t lost our touch. The best compliment to us is when other clubs copy what we do.

When did you realize Discotekka was a success?

The moment we were imprinted on the minds of partygoers, and Discotekka was in everyone’s Facebook and Instagram…Well, back then [it was] Myspace (lol).

What do you attribute the success of Discotekka to?

The people. We are nothing without our crowd, and we do have the most amazing group of disco_6followers weekend after weekend! Also to our incredible and creative team who we thank every day for what they do. They know who they are!

What were some of your favorite events at Discotekka?

The Waterworks series, without a doubt. As a matter of fact, our first Waterwork party of the year is on April 12, so save the date! We cannot forget “Welcome to China Town,” “Black Out Lock Down,” “Circus,” “Santeria,” and all of our memorable Halloween parties. We would be remiss if we did not talk about La Puta Nota, our famous after hours that happens every week.

What can people expect at the seventh anniversary party?

A big celebration…fireworks, live drums, dancers, drags, costumes, discotekka_7house music, and everything else our people love. We’ve been around for seven years and we want to continue the party!

What’s ahead for Discotekka?

There are many plans in motion at the moment. We are not at liberty to speak about the latter, but all I can give you at this time is REINVENTION!

Don’t forget that on Saturday March 22nd, Discotekka presents their disco_5seventh anniversary. At press time the event will include a VIP reception for the Industry from 11 p.m. to midnight and VIP reception for patrons from midnight until 1 a.m. that will include champagne, hors d’oeuvres and a VIP card drive. No cover before 1 a.m. for anybody. International DJ Renn Torino will be spinning, as well as house after hours DJ Carlos G.

We would like to wish Joe, Milancita, Alyson, Danny and the entire Discotekka staff a very happy seventh anniversary and we are hoping for many more years of success.
