You Just Can’t Make This Stuff Up!

Miss Joey Brooks has been a good friend of ours for many years. Joey, Miss Ybor City, was even the very first Miss MC Film Festival. Her gold-framed photo is in our store today. One Monday all three of us were off for the day.  We thought it would be fun to head for St. Petersburg for the afternoon. Arriving at Georgie’s Alibi, the three of us headed for the outside bar. Our drinks had just arrived when up pops this guy in his twenties. He was all bubbly excited to see Mark and Carrie from Ybor City. We all started to talk when he says, “I just love going to Ybor City to see Joey Brooks perform. She is my favorite!!!”

Joey, who was out of drag, just smiled, turned to us and winked, then said, “She is my favorite too.” The young guy went on to say “Joey and me are best friends. I even know all the words to her songs.” He then starts to sing a song. Joey joined in and the poor guy never realized it was Joey.

We didn’t say a word but we laughed all the way home.

“Gay Sex Life” Playing at Studio 620

A new original locally-written play, “Gay Sex Life” by Joseph Alan Johnson, is being performed at Studio 620 in St. Pete to help kick off St. Pete Pride. The play dates are June 9, 10, and 11.

It is a laugh-a-minute gay comedy about our community! It will be a sellout! Tickets are on sale now! thestudioat620.org

The Third GaYBOR President

The GaYBOR District Coalition picked its third president. The newly-reigning head honcho is Michael ‘Sheriff’ Wilson. A realignment of officers on the expanding GLBTA Business Coalition is moving along smoothly. The other officers are unchanged: Brian “Prada” Betz as Secretary, Walter Pinillos as Treasurer, Jayme Kosar in charge of events and membership and Stacey Ward “Geeky Gal” in charge of social media.

People Are Talking!

We had to make a road trip to the newly opened gay club in St. Pete, Enigma! The owner, Ed G., greeted us and told us about the planned club’s grand opening on June 12th. The club currently smells of fresh paint and is very airy with two large bars and a dance floor. Workers were still working on projects while we were there.  What’s unique is that the bar has an open bar street window for outside cafe-style enjoyment.  A lot of the old familiar faces from Georgie’s are now working at Enigma. We saw a lot of old friends and familiar faces at the club. It’s located on Central Avenue at 10th Street.

Just down the street is the future Metro Wellness LGBT Welcome Center on Central Avenue. Recently 30 volunteers from Balance Tampa Bay turned out to help with the renovations for the new center and gave a $7,000 check to the new GLBT Youth and Welcome Center. Stop by during St. Pete Pride for a tour of one of the very few GLBT Welcome Centers in the country. We gave our financial support to this historical and monumental center. Congrats as we welcome the grand opening.

The Pour House in Channelside had a great sausage Thursday night with a variety of homemade brats! I, being a Wisconsin boy, love brats. The Tampa Bay Sausage Laboratory  Company will be at Pour House on Thursdays. Check out the 30 types of beer on draft at Pour House, located on the first floor of the Kennedy Grand Condos.
