I Am Harvey Milk is a musical and theatrical celebration of the life of Harvey Milk, the gay rights pioneer who was assassinated in San Francisco in 1978. This piece was commissioned by the artistic director of the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus and was written and composed by the Broadway composer and producer Andrew Lippa. This ambitious piece premiered in San Francisco, performed by the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, as part of their 35th anniversary celebrations in June 2013. After that performance, choruses and performing arts halls across the country had the option of putting I Am Harvey Milk on their schedules. I Am Harvey Milk even got its chance on Broadway with a one-night-only performance last October, starring Lippa and Tony Award winner Kristin Chenoweth.HarveyMilk_bottom
