For this week’s Small business spotlight I sat down with Steven D. Brooks , President of Cornerstone Insurance Services to find out more about the best ways to make sure your insurance needs are being met.
Tell our readers about your business and a bit about yourself.
I’m originally from Minnesota however I’ve lived in Florida for 24 years. I have spent most of my career working for several fortune 500 companies as a vice president of sales. I started my first Insurance agency over 11 years ago in Sarasota, Florida which is still successful today. In addition I spend a great deal of time performing charity work. I am one of the founders and the current President of Soul2Sole Foundation which was founded in memory of a good Friend, Dr. Brian Sigal who passed away 2 years ago. My partner and I are very busy with 6 children ranging in ages from 7 to 25. Cornerstone Insurance has been serving Broward County for more than 30 years. We have locations at 1995 East Oakland Park Suite 300 and in Margate.
What types of insurance do you specialize in?
We offer all personal lines of insurance which includes: auto, home, health, and boat insurance. My personal specialty is commercial insurance as we provide business owner’s insurance, investment property insurance, workers compensation insurance, general liability insurance, and commercial property insurance and commercial yacht insurance. In addition, due to my background in healthcare, our agency is directly appointed with one of the largest malpractice insurance brokerage houses in the US. We specialize in both professional liability insurance as well as medical malpractice insurance.
What are some of the advantages of using a local insurance agency instead of one of the big national chains?
One advantage of working with Cornerstone over other agencies is the fact that we take the time to meet with our customers to fully understand their needs and to ensure that we are properly insuring them with quality insurance carriers. We tailor each policy to fit our customer’s needs. What are some common mistakes that people make when purchasing insurance?
Some the mistakes people make when buying insurance include not insuring their homes at the proper replacement value. Often times people over or under insure their home. In addition, often people make the mistake of getting the bare minimum coverage when attaining coverage for auto insurance. This can be a big mistake especially if policy holders have assets they need to protect. Furthermore, these minimal coverages often are not sufficient should medical attention be needed. As people’s assets and exposure to risk change so should their policies. Often times people overlook the need to update their insurance policies to reflect changes that may occur during their lives.
