El segundo festival Hydro Caribbean se llevará a cabo el próximo 28 al 30 de abril en San Juan, Puerto Rico. Hay un montón de eventos planeados por todo el fin de semana en la capital boricua. Algunos de los clubs más grandes del caribe participan en el festival y este año, los organizadores traen un grupo de los DJs más conocidos en el mundo gay para hacer que la gente mueve su cadera.
El hotel anfitrión de este año es el San Juan Water Beach Club Hotel. Edwin Toledo, un organizador del Hydro Caribbean Festival dijo que la idea del festival ¨ Surgió de la necesidad de abrir un nuevo mercado en el Caribe, en este caso Puerto Rico. Un festival que sea mucho más económico que otros festivales y que le brinde de la oportunidad al público de los visitantes de tener un punto turístico económico como es el caso de Puerto Rico. Es más económico viajar de los EEUU, la comida, la gastronomía la música, diferentes puntos culturales. Entonces, además de tener un festival de música dance, pues, le provee esa opción al visitante de que pueda disfrutar de la isla. Es el primer y único festival gay que se hace en el caribe. Tiene una tendencia de música conocida dentro del gay dance al nivel mundial con el DJ lineup que estamos trayendo este año.¨
Hablando del line up de DJs, es espectacular este año. Con 10 DJs la música no terminará todo el fin de. Entre los más conocidos son DJ Aron de Israel, DJ Alex Acosta de México, y DJ Dani Toro de España. La lista también incluye Beth Sacks, DJ Hannah de Miami, DJ Iván Gómez, DJ GSP, DJ Rico Alexis, y DJ Ed Wood y Nina Flowers, los dos de Puerto Rico. Todos los eventos de la fiesta se llevarán a cabo en el hotel anfitrión y en Club Circo y Club Kronos. Habrá un shuttle entre el hotel y los eventos.
Cuando pregunté a Toledo sobre la vida gay in Puerto Rico, me dijo: ¨hay un gay life bastante grande, al igual que EEUU. Pues como es parte de EEUU, es bastante liberal, no hay mucha tardura en cuanto al ambiente. Hay discotecas, hay bares, hay clubs. El festival ha tenido muy buena aceptación en el primer año, y este año se espera vender completamente. Eso es lo que queremos, que coincida el boricua con el visitante, y puedan que le den un nuevo mercado. Al hacer el primer festival, estamos llamado mucha atención tanto en Puerto Rico como afuera y es buena porque hay tantos boricuas participando en el festival como los de afuera.

The second Hydro Caribbean festival will take place on April 28-30 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. There are plenty of events planned throughout the weekend in the capital city of Puerto Rico. Some of the biggest clubs in the Caribbean will participate in the festival and this year, organizers are bringing a group of the best known DJs in the gay world to make sure all the people move their hips.
This year’s host hotel is the San Juan Water Beach Club Hotel. Edwin Toledo, an organizer of the Hydro Caribbean Festival said that the idea of the festival ¨arose from the need to open a new market in the Caribbean, in this case Puerto Rico. We wanted to provide a festival that is much cheaper than other festivals and that gives the opportunity to visitors to have a great time here in Puerto Rico and help drive the country´s economic engine, tourism. Compared to other Caribbean countries, it is cheaper to travel from the US, there´s the food, the music, and so many other different cultural points. So, besides just being a dance music festival, it provides the visitors with the opportunity to enjoy the island. It is the first and only gay festival in the Caribbean and will feature some of the most wildly known DJs within the gay dance world.¨
Speaking of the lineup of DJs, it’s spectacular this year. With 10 DJs, the music won´t stop all weekend long. When I asked Toledo about gay life in Puerto Rico, he said: “There is a fairly big gay life, just like in the Mainland US. Since Puerto Rico it is part of the US, it is quite liberal, there is not much delay in the environment. There are plenty of nightclubs and bars. The festival was widely accepted the first year, and this year is expected to sell out completely. That is what we want, that the Puerto Rican people interact with the visitors. In making the first gay festival in the Caribbean, we are attracting a lot of attention both in Puerto Rico and abroad and it is good because there are so many Puerto Ricans participating in the festival as well as those from outside the country.
