Mswenson94 posted on r/ainbow: “I’ve seen posts on social media suggesting LGBTQ+ people are intolerant for standing up for ourselves against intolerance toward us. Queer and Trans* people do not need to put up with your intolerance.” Mswenson94 is correct in recognizing this old red herring. The religious right claims that their religion entitles them to condemn, insult, demonize, ostracize, harass, bully, and legislate against all kinds of people. This type of far-right religious person suggests that if you oppose their cruel and abusive narrative you are actually somehow infringing on their rights.

Let’s be clear…no matter what they worship, what words they call holy, what their tradition calls good or sinful, THEY DO NOT have a right to limit anyone’s civil rights, anyone’s safety, or anyone’s access to every good thing the nation has to offer. They call their intolerance righteous, and your rejection of their demonization of you or other people they call intolerance. It’s a shell game, a scam, a lie, a trick of manipulation. Do not fall for it. Even if they really believe God told them to be jerks, that does not make being a jerk less reprehensible, and it does not mean that you have to accept their flawed narrative. Someone’s religion is not an excuse for being cruel, ever. Queer God Squad, can I get a witness?
