Marjorie Taylor Greene introduced a bill to put doctors who treat trans kids in jail.
The Republican congress member from Georgia reintroduced her bill to ban gender-affirming care for transgender youth and make accessing gender-affirming care more difficult for adults.
The “Protect Children’s Innocence Act,” which Greene introduced in previous sessions of Congress, would make it a felony for doctors to follow the standard of care for gender dysphoria with trans youth. It would ban federal funds—including Medicaid funds—from being used for gender affirming care for transgender people, ban medical schools from teaching about gender affirming care, stop health care plans under the Affordable Care Act from funding gender affirming care, and ban anyone found to have performed gender affirming care from immigrating to the U.S.
Advocates of transgender equality point out that trans people don’t want to change their gender, instead describing transitioning as living authentically. Gender-affirming care for trans minors is supported by the American Medical Association, the Endocrine Society, and other leading medical organizations. The AMA recently issued a resolution reaffirming its support for gender-affirming care based on scientific evidence.
