In the 1980s, kids tuning in to She-Ra: Princess of Power heard more than lessons about courage and kindness; they were hearing the voice of Erika Scheimer, a proud lesbian and daughter of Filmation co-founder Lou Scheimer. Erika voiced the moral lessons that closed each episode and helped make Filmation one of the gayest places in town. She said the studio was a safe haven where she could come out young and live openly. Though queer characters weren’t explicit then, Scheimer and her team’s influence paved the way for today’s LGBTQ+ animation heroes.
