The Broward Center for the Performing Arts presents Riverdance30 – The Next Generation from Friday, January 30 through Sunday, Feb 1.
Since Riverdance first emerged onto the world stage, its fusion of Irish and international dance and music has captured the hearts of millions worldwide. The Grammy Award-winning music and the infectious energy of its mesmerizing choreography and breathtaking performances have left audiences in awe and established Riverdance as a global cultural sensation for more than 30 years.
Celebrating this 30th year milestone, Riverdance is bringing its magic to audiences around the world with a special anniversary tour. This spectacular production rejuvenates the much-loved original show with new innovative choreography and costumes and state of the art lighting, projection and motion graphics. And for the first time Riverdance welcomes “The New Generation” of performers, none of whom were born when the show began 30 years ago.
John McColgan, Director of Riverdance said, “It is both a privilege and a delight to celebrate 30 years of Riverdance and the unique journey it has taken us on. In those 30 years the show has transformed from a spectacle into a global cultural phenomenon–continuously evolving yet remaining true to its Irish roots. This special anniversary tour features ‘The New Generation’ of artists while paying tribute to the talented performers, creators, dedicated crew, and the millions of fans who have made Riverdance a worldwide celebration of music and dance.”
It was a pleasure to sit down with principal dancer Brian Culligan for this exclusive Hotspots interview.

At what age did you begin dancing?
I started Irish dancing when I was about 8, so I was late as most people start at 3 or 4. My sister was in dance class and one day my parents had nowhere to put me so they put me in the class and the teacher said I had talent and I never stopped dancing.
What was your first Professional/Paid gig?
I started small when I was 10, there was a Sassoon, where musicians would gather and perform for tourists, and I got 20 euro per night, which we thought was a lot of money at the time.
What’s your fantasy role/dance?
My fantasy role would be to become a Choreographer, once I finish up with Riverdance….I mean in the future.
Do you have a mentor in the dance world?
I wouldnt say mentor, but I definitely looked up to a lot of the lead dancers in Riverdance before me. They all really helped me when I first joined the show.
You have traveled all over the world; do you have a favorite city or venue?
My favorite city is Dubai, I have been lucky to be there 4 times, and my favorite venue is Radio City Music Hall.
How did you get cast in River Dance?
I did the Riverdance summer school right before Covid, and then I did an online audition in August of 2021. In November 2021 was my first gig with Riverdance.
What’s the best part being in Riverdance?
Competitive Irish dancing is tough and touring with Riverdance is a way that all that hard work paid off. You also get to be around 30+ dancers who did the same thing, and of course the amazing travel we do.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Funny, dedicated, and hard-working.
What do you do for fun?
I love just finding a nice coffee shop and finding out about the nightlife as well.
What should the Broward audiences expect from Riverdance 30 – The New Generation ?
They can expect an eye opening experience of what Irish dancing is and how it can mix with so many other cultures. Without any spoken words you can feel the energy and be blown away.
