While promoting her directorial debut The Chronology of Water on ABC News’ All Access with Linsey Davis, Stewart reflected on the pressure she once faced to stay closeted for the sake of her career. She recalled being advised not to hold her girlfriend’s hand publicly because it might hurt her opportunities. Stewart’s response was a firm no. The actor clarified she never hid out of shame, but rather to protect her relationships from tabloid spectacle. Coming out, she explained, became a statement — one she hoped would “unlock other people’s doors.”
