Hungarian opposition leader Péter Magyar has defeated Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in a landslide election victory. Orbán, a close ally of Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, had faced criticism over policies, including restrictions on LGBTQ+ rights. His Fidesz party lost decisively to Magyar’s Tisza party, which has pledged closer ties to the European Union and Ukraine. The election result follows a controversial Pride ban passed last year, restricting LGBTQ+ gatherings under “child protection” laws. While Magyar has promised to protect freedom of assembly, critics say he has not clearly supported LGBTQ+ rights.
