The Trump administration has opened federal civil rights investigations into three Michigan school districts over policies that allow transgender students to participate in sports and use locker rooms consistent with their gender identity. The U.S. Department of Education announced investigations into Ann Arbor Public Schools, Monroe Public Schools, and Chippewa Valley School District, alleging the policies may violate Title IX by discriminating against cisgender students.
Chippewa Valley Schools said it had not received official notice before the announcement but pledged cooperation, stating, “As a matter of practice, the district cooperates fully with any review conducted by the Office for Civil Rights. Chippewa Valley Schools remains committed to providing a safe, supportive, and respectful learning environment for all students and to complying with all applicable federal and state laws and regulations.”
The investigations follow a complaint filed by a parent regarding a transgender student on an Ann Arbor girls volleyball team and come one day after a similar federal probe was launched in North Carolina. The actions are part of the administration’s broader effort to enforce its interpretation of Title IX, following President Donald Trump’s executive order seeking to bar transgender athletes from competing on teams that align with their gender identity.
