For LGBTQ Plus Florida Democrats As We Prepare to Vote

On Tuesday, August 18, 2026, Florida Democrats in the newly drawn 20th Congressional District will head to the polls to choose among several Democratic candidates, including incumbent Debbie Wasserman Schultz, former Broward County Mayor Dale Holness, community activist Elijah Manley, and youth football coach and entertainer Luther Campbell. Every election offers voters an opportunity to decide what qualities they value most in leadership. Some seek fresh perspectives. Others believe experience and established relationships are especially important during periods of uncertainty. Whatever your viewpoint, informed participation remains the foundation of our democracy.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz has compiled one of the longest records of public service among the candidates. She served in the Florida House of Representatives from 1992 until 2004 before being elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2004, where she has served ever since. During her congressional career, she has worked on issues involving healthcare, Medicare, veterans’ services, disaster recovery, women’s health, and support for Israel. She also served as Chair of the Democratic National Committee from 2011 through 2016, placing her in one of the most influential leadership positions within the Democratic Party.

Throughout her career, Wasserman Schultz has also maintained a longstanding record of supporting the LGBTQ+ community. She has consistently backed federal anti discrimination protections, marriage equality, expanded HIV/AIDS funding, hate-crime protections, and legislation such as the Equality Act. For many LGBTQ+ Floridians, she has been viewed as a dependable ally over many years.

Her opponents also bring meaningful public and community experience. Dale Holness previously served as Mayor of Broward County and as a Broward County Commissioner. Elijah Manley is a community activist and former candidate for public office who has focused on grassroots organizing and economic opportunity. Luther Campbell is widely known for his youth mentorship through football programs and his advocacy for underserved communities.

Ultimately, every voter must decide which candidate they believe is best prepared to represent South Florida in Washington. Experience, new ideas, community engagement, and leadership style are all legitimate considerations.
