On Wednesday, September 9, the city of Fort Lauderdale cut the ribbon on a brand-new home for the Fort Lauderdale Police Department. During the celebration, neighbors and staff got a look at the new Headquarters and saw all the improvements that will help our police officers and staff keep our neighborhoods safe.
On Thursday, September 10, Galleria Fort Lauderdale hosted a special ribbon cutting ceremony to launch The Poppy Project Pop-Up Living Garden in support of Henderson Behavioral Health (HBH) in collaboration with the USS Fort Lauderdale (LPD28) Support Committee. The event featured City of Fort Lauderdale’s Mayor Dean Trantalis and community leaders with singer Zachary Kopelman, as they unveiled this public art initiative designed to honor veterans while raising awareness and funds for critical mental health services. Adding to the installation, was “Soldier Stories,” an exclusive exhibition by award-winning artist Marilyn Johansen honoring veterans and the military. The cherished photo opportunity with the larger-than-life artistic poppy flowers runs through November 10.
On Friday, September 11, Empire Stage Theater premiered “Southern Baptist Sissies.” From the creator of “Sordid Lives,” and based in a small town in Texas, four boys named Mark, Benny, TJ, and Andrew retell their experiences of discovering their homosexuality while being raised in a conservative Baptist church. The play is a satirical comedy and a serious exploration of what it means to be gay. Playing through October 4.
On Monday, September 14, Silver Pride+ Connection at Holy Cross Family Health Center
welcomed Michael Emanuel Rajner, BSW, as their guest speaker for an engaging discussion on the importance of advocacy, leadership, and continuing to use our voices as we age. This event provided an opportunity for open dialogue about how LGBTQ+ older adults can collectively make an impact in our communities, especially when it comes to healthcare access, quality of care, and the issues that affect our lives as we grow older
On Tuesday, September 15, The GFL LGBTQ+ and Allied Chamber of Commerce presented their September Mixer at Plunge Beach Resort, and once again it was a sold out event.
On Wednesday, September 16, Twist presents their annual Turnabout, a night of exquisite shows by the Twist staff which was hosted by TP Lords. I always love seeing how the staff is going to dress up!
On Sunday, Sept 20, HRC South Florida had an inspiring gathering of advocates, leaders, and supporters committed to advancing equality for all at the home of Commissioner Don D’Arminio and Marc Martoran. Their special guests were Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Wilton Manors Mayor Scott Newton, and former Vice Mayor Julie Carson, In addition, Richard Fulks, from the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida did a moving and relevant musical tribute.
