On Tuesday was the first Fort Lauderdale Mack Mixer of 2011 and took place at the popular J. Marks restaurant on their new patio. The Hors d’oeuvres were delicious, thanks Steve and Ariel! With over 250 guests, the mixer was a huge success. Congratulations once again to DJ and Danny for doing a fabulous job! Boom started their 10 year anniversary weekend on Wednesday and continued all weekend with record crowds including a 3D party on Saturday that was really freaky. The decorations were amazing (kudos Chris and Diego) and when you tried on the 3D glasses it really looked like things were coming at you… very cool job guys!

gay-events-south-florida-2Saturday night was the annual “Kind Of A Drag” which takes place at the Walt and Stephen Lewis Center for Worship and the Arts and benefited many important charities. I was personally humbled to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award (quick not to Lewis Nicholson…if I can ever afford a PR Agent, you are definitely the one I am hiring!) and would like to thank Corey Boyd and the board of Kind Of A Drag for bestowing me with such an honor. The event was a huge success and filled with fabulous entertainment. The Golden Globes aired Sunday night and kudos to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for honoring Gay actors/movies and actors playing Gay roles. Congratulations to The Kids Are All Right, Annette Bening, GLEE, Jane Lynch and Chris Colfer.

gay-events-south-florida-3After enjoying the GG’s I headed out to Bill’s for Misty Eyez annual birthday party. This party always features tons of entertainers and a packed house and this year was no exception. Congrats to Misty and Bill’s Filling Station on another fabulous birthday celebration!

gay-events-south-florida-8Les Ballets Trockadero De Monte Carlo will return to south Florida for the first time in over six years direct from a sold-out, critically acclaimed engagement at The Joyce Theater in New York City for one performance only, on Tuesday, February 1 at 8 pm at The Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater.  The evening will feature a program of audience favorites performed by the primo ballerinas that have made this beloved troupe the foremost all-male comic ballet company in the world.  With an astounding mastery of ballet technique, flamboyant personalities, and maybe a little more chest hair than your average Giselle, the world-renowned ballerinas of the TROCKS illuminate the passion, tragedy and joy of classical ballet, all squeezed into size 12 pointe shoes.  As London’s Sunday Telegraph wrote recently about the company, “We might have come to laugh, but we stayed to worship.”  With legends like Olga Supphozova, Sveltlana Lofatkina, Lariska Dumbchenko returning with the company, the TROCKS are guaranteed to provide a shimmering, comedic and superlatively danced evening of family-friendly ballet this holiday season.  Tickets start at $25, range up to $75 and can be purchased through Live Nation online at LiveNation.com or call 800.745.3000.

gay-events-south-florida-9Just over 2 weeks ago Sidelines Sports Bar reopened its doors as a “NEW”, clean, and smoke-free environment. It seems that many in Fort Lauderdale’s LGBT community, Sidelines’ loyal patrons and the non-smoking curiosity seekers have made their feelings known to owners, Laurie Whittaker and Marty Kildea. “Bravo”, “Great Decision”, “Thanks”, and “Love It” are just a few of the encouraging messages received thus far. On Wednesday, January 5, 2011, Sidelines became a smoke-free establishment. With the enormous help of the talented Sidelines’ staff, in two short days the sports bar was immaculately cleaned, refurnished with new bar stools, new sports memorabilia, and carefully hung team flags. In addition, a new outdoor patio area was constructed with tables and chairs for smokers. Not to worry, though, these changes have in no way affected the “sports theme” that has made Sidelines the repeated award-winning entertainment venue of Fort Lauderdale since their opening in 2006. They are still Sidelines Sports Bar, “Where Sports Come First”! We here at Hotspots congratulate Laurie, Marty and Jennifer and the entire Sidelines staff for a job well done!
