The gay owned-and-operated small business I Do, Custom Events has been planning weddings, galas, fundraisers and other special events in South Florida for the past seven years. The staff at I Do, Custom Events have expertise in planning events not just in South Florida, but in New York City, San Francisco and Chicago, meaning they come to the table with innovative and fresh ideas for every kind of party, whether it’s for ten or a thousand.
They can, and do, design the event to your specifications, from the decor to the menu to finding the right venue, and then managing the execution of the finished product at the venue. I Do, Custom Events excels at putting together the events that accentuate the important moments of your life.
I spoke to Devin MacLachlan, creative director at I Do, Custom Events, about his work and what marriage equality in Florida means for his business.
What kinds of events are I Do, Custom Events working on right now?
We’re doing a lot of weddings. We’re also doing more work with non-profits right now. Gilda’s Club of South Florida is organizing their “Over the Edge” annual fundraiser. I’m helping them throw their kick-off party.
Regarding weddings, how has your business been impacted by marriage equality coming to Florida?
It’s been impacted positively. I’ve definitely noticed an uptick of people who have called and inquired about our services. Until recently, same-sex couples may have thought about weddings, but didn’t think it would be an option for them. Now the door has been thrown open and there are so many options out there. The important thing is that these couples get the chance to validate their love on their terms.
How do you help people who come to you for wedding planning?
I like to take the time to get to know a couple over coffee or a glass of wine, so I can get a clear idea of who they are, separately and together. Because it’s not my wedding; it’s your wedding. We want to make the event the best one possible.
When people come to us, they may have some great ideas, but then there are some aspects they may not have thought of or considered. I help couples by bringing all the options I can to the table. Yes, you can have this cake. You can have these flowers that you wanted. I have to be able to adapt to the vision the couple wants, but also guide them and be as helpful as I can.
