Adora: Sleeper, ¿cómo dijiste que te llamaban ‘Sleeper’? .. Pareces completamente despierto para mí …
Sleeper: Me dieron ese nombre en THE DUMP, (como lo llamábamos), donde vivía y trabajaba después de salir de casa a los 15 años. Hacían fiestas a veces y como yo era el único que todavía estaba en la escuela. Tendría que acostarme temprano para poder levantarme por las mañanas. A esa edad los niños juegan con usted si usted es el primero en desmayarse, si lo hace como dibujar sobre usted o coserle al sofá. Pero si te llamas Sleeper, estás bien. Jaja … No es una historia muy interesante. Aunque funcionó bien para mí.
Más tarde lo adopté como mi nombre de artista: me dio la libertad de expresarme más abiertamente como Sleeper, para tomar riesgos en mi arte. especialmente en Rendimiento a esa edad. Era una especie de herramienta para involucrarme conscientemente en cómo quería dar forma a mi vida más libremente.
Teddy Behr: Cuéntanos un poco acerca de ti: ¿qué es importante para ti en tu práctica artística y por qué?
Sleeper: : Soy un artista que vive en Miami. Principalmente hago trabajos de escultura, performance e instalación.
Terminé en programas de artes escolares desde la escuela primaria. Miami era un lugar bastante bueno para mí; hubo oportunidades para aprender sobre las artes y parecía más o menos bien ser LatinX Queer.

Adora: ¿Cómo comenzó la fiesta ‘Gender Blender’?
Sleeper: Empecé a trabajar en clubes desde una edad muy temprana, era principalmente la escuela durante la semana y el bar y los clubes los fines de semana. Trabajé en casi todas las posiciones, desde busser hasta bar manager. Durante ese tiempo, tuve una idea de los diferentes aspectos de los eventos en ejecución. Realmente nunca parecía ser el tipo de cosa que siempre quise hacer, pero me dio la oportunidad y, finalmente, decidí crear algo que sentía que Miami se estaba perdiendo; así que con la ayuda de gente increíble como Juleisy y Karla, Kesiah, Radskillz, Zehno, (por nombrar algunos) y el personal de The Corner Bar (donde originalmente comenzamos la fiesta ‘Counter Corner’, que precedió a Gender Blender} … ¡Ha sido un viaje! Sleeper: Adrian Madriz, fundador de SMASH, {Struggle for Miami’s Affordable and Sustainable Housing}, una organización sin fines de lucro que aborda cuestiones relacionadas con la gentrificación, los propietarios de barrios marginales y personas sin hogar, me preguntó si estaba interesado en colaborar con ellos para recaudar fondos. No solo se sintió como un evento para recaudar fondos, sino como una muestra de cuánto amor hay en la comunidad queer. Ahora hay tanto en marcha en la escena, es un momento emocionante para estar en Miami.
Teddy Behr: ¿Alguna recomendación para las personas que quieran involucrarse más en nuestra comunidad?
Sleeper: Realmente no hay mucho para eso. Tómate un tiempo y muéstrate. Pide ayuda, ayuda a otros. Colabore o simplemente hable con la gente y haga amigos, se sorprenderá de lo amigables que pueden ser estos Miami Queers. ¡La mitad de la batalla es simplemente estar presente honestamente, apoyar a la comunidad y a los artistas del arrastre que trabajan duro maldita sea! Adora: Sleeper, how did you wind being called ’Sleeper’ ? ..You seem wide awake to me…
Sleeper: I was given that name at THE DUMP, (as we called it), where I lived and worked after leaving home at age 15. They would throw parties sometimes and since I was the only one still in school. I’d have to go to sleep early so I could get up in the mornings. At that age kids mess around with you if you are the first to pass out, by like drawing on you, or sewing you to the couch. But if you are called Sleeper you are ok. Lol… Its not a very interesting story. It worked well for me though.
Later on I adopted it as my artist name: It gave me the freedom to express myself more openly as Sleeper, to take risks in my art. especially in Performance at that age. It was kind of tool to consciously engage in how I wanted to shape my life more freely.
Teddy Behr: Tell a bit about yourself: what’s important to you in your artistic practice and why?
Sleeper: I’m an artist living in Miami. I primarily do sculpture, performance and installation work. I wound up in school arts programs since primary school. Miami was a pretty good place for me to come up; there were opportunities to learn about the arts and it seemed more or less ok to be LatinX Queer.
My art and performance is directly connected to club and event performance; I’ve been told it’s accessible and up-front, which makes sense to me… I suppose the way I’ve used electronics and light are also related to club performance..same for super real or surreal imagery I’m told I make use of.
Adora: So how did the ‘Gender Blender’ Party get started?
Sleeper: I started working clubs from a very young age, it was mostly school during the week and bar and clubs on the weekends. I worked almost every position from busser to bar manager. During that time i got a sense of the different aspects of running events. It never really seemed like the type of thing I ever wanted to do, but it gave me an opportunity and eventually I decided to create something I felt Miami was missing; so with the help of some amazing people like Juleisy y Karla, Kesiah, Radskillz, Zehno, (to name a few), and The Corner Bar staff, (where we originally started the ‘Counter Corner’ party, which preceded Gender Blender}…It’s been a journey! Miami RAN with it… The people were already here, they just didn’t have a place that was theirs.
I am partners with Party Karloz and Neon Brown in Gender Blender. They had started the event event together and asked me early on to jump on board the Queer Punx night. I identified with their mission and was really happy to be a part of something else I felt Miami needed. We moved the party from Churchill’s to Las Rosas, (2898Nw 7th Ave, Miami 33127), made it a free event, and the rest kind of snowballed into this magical night I look forward to every month.
Teddy Behr: So more recently you’ve gotten involved in LGBTQ Youth Homelessness . How did that come about?
Sleeper: Adrian Madriz who is the founder of SMASH, {Struggle for Miami’s Affordable and Sustainable Housing}, a non profit that tackles issues surrounding gentrification, slumlords and homelessness, asked me if i was interested in teaming up with them for a fundraiser. SMASH has a project focusing on building an LGBTQ+ youth shelter and transitional facility. (www.smash.miami/blog). I felt connected to the issue aside from all the alarming data Adrian presented me with.
Through Counter Corner and Gender Blender we were able organize such an amazing event, raising over $12,000 in one night. It was overwhelming the amount of support the cause drew from the community: From the Drag performers donating their talents for the night, Lemon City Day School for housing us, to local bar GRAMPS donating the bar sales and catering the night, to THE STATE OF blessing us with their music, it was SO MUCH! It didn’t just feel like a fundraiser, it felt like a display of how much love there is in the Queer community. There is so much starting up now in the scene, its an exciting time to be in Miami.
Teddy Behr: Any recommendations for people who might want to get more involved in our community?
Sleeper: There really is not much to it. Make time, and show up. Ask for help, help others. Collaborate or just talk to people and make friends, you will be surprised how friendly these Miami Queers can be. Half the battle is just being present honestly, support the community and those hard working drag performers damnit! LOL…
