In 2005, The Simpsons once again became the center of pop culture discourse. This time, all the conversation was about the season 16 episode “There’s Something About Marrying,” which tackled the topic of same-sex marriage. (note we are in season 34). This was a point in American history when same-sex marriage was only legal in Massachusetts, while many states were engaged in reaffirming that marriage was “supposed to be” only between people assigned male and female at birth. Written by J. Stewart Burns and directed by Nancy Kruse, the episode shows Lisa Simpson suggesting Springfield legalize gay marriage as a way of bringing people back to the town to ensure cash inflow. The cherry on top, we also see Homer Simpson officiating a wedding between his sister-in-law, Patty, and her girlfriend Veronica.
