Lady Gaga New Album ‘Mayhem’ Was Inspired By Queer And Black Ballroom Culture

Lady Gaga’s new album, Mayhem, is inspired by ballroom culture and queer resilience. Gaga has confirmed it. During her recent interview, she credited Paris Is Burning and the ballroom scene as major influences. She recalled learning from dancers who lived that life, calling it a privilege. Gaga explained, “There are spaces where the community experiences joy, even when life is difficult.” She called ballroom a powerful example of resilience.

Gaga is not the only artist to do this. Beyoncé also honored ballroom culture with her album Renaissance, featuring artists like Kevin Aviance and DJ MikeQ. She dedicated the album to her late uncle Johnny, a gay man who introduced her to the culture. With Gaga and Beyoncé both celebrating ballroom history, fans are now also speculating about a Telephone sequel. Lady Gaga’s Mayhem drops on Friday, May 7.
