In a recent appearance on the We In Miami podcast, actor and comedian Marlon Wayans addressed the public discourse surrounding his trans son, Kai. Wayans dismissed the idea that his family’s life is a “debate,” asserting that his support for Kai is rooted in fundamental parental instinct rather than political activism. Wayans was remarkably candid about his own personal growth, describing a “transition” of his own.
He admitted to moving from a place of “ignorance and denial” to one of unconditional, non-negotiable love. By doing so, he highlights that the journey of acceptance is often a process for the parent as much as it is for the child. Wayans views protecting his child as a basic duty that should not be considered “radical.” He joins other high-profile Black fathers, such as Dwyane Wade, in publicly shielding their children from societal and political scrutiny.
Despite a landscape of increasing external policing of Queer families, Wayans remains focused on the internal strength of his family unit. Ultimately, Wayans’ message is simple: while the world may judge, a father’s primary responsibility is to stand by his child.
