A federal judge has temporarily blocked enforcement of Texas’ SB 12, a law targeting queer student organizations. SB 12 was the first US law explicitly banning LGBTQ+ student clubs. It also restricted diversity initiatives and barred teachers from using trans students’ preferred names, even with parental support. US District Judge Charles Eskridge ruled that Houston, Plano, and Katy school districts could not enforce the measure, criticized by state Rep. Erin Zwiener as “nakedly hateful”. Supporters argued the law protects children from perceived sexualization, while opponents said it censors constitutionally protected speech.
