Scientists in India have identified a rare intersex crab in the Western Ghats. The freshwater species Vela carli, found in Kerala’s Silent Valley National Park, showed both male and female features. Out of 120 crabs observed in tree holes, three displayed the condition, known in animals as gynandromorphy. Researchers say these are the first recorded cases in this species. The study was conducted by K.S. Anoop Das and K.T. Fahis, alongside other collaborators. Das said the condition is likely due to developmental processes rather than environmental pollution.
