Last month, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani signed an historic executive order establishing the city’s first-ever Mayor’s Office of LGBTQIA+ Affairs. To lead the new department, Mamdani appointed Taylor Brown, a prominent civil rights attorney formerly with the New York State Attorney General’s Office. Brown’s appointment is a major milestone, as she becomes the first transgender person to lead a New York City agency.

The office is designed to centralize municipal resources, oversee LGBTQIA+ initiatives, and ensure city agencies adhere to anti-discrimination guidelines. Key priorities include expanding the NYC Unity Project and strengthening sanctuary protections for LGBTQIA+ individuals in response to federal policy shifts. Mayor Mamdani emphasized that the office aims to ensure queer New Yorkers are “not only celebrated, but protected.” Brown expressed her commitment to maintaining New York as a “beacon of hope” for marginalized communities, focusing on equity in healthcare, housing, and education.
