Despite dreary, chilly weather on Sunday, the atmosphere inside the Salamander Hotel in downtown Washington, D.C., was warm and energized. With the U.S. Capitol, National Mall, and Washington Monument as a backdrop, LGBTQ political leaders gathered for the 25th annual LGBTQ+ Victory Fund National Champagne Brunch, celebrating progress while confronting rising political challenges.

Just over a mile away, an increasingly hostile Trump administration heightened urgency around LGBTQ rights, particularly for transgender Americans. Still, attendees arrived in full force, filling the ballroom with vibrant outfits and optimism. The event brought together more than 150 queer elected officials and allies from across the country, representing offices from local governments to Capitol Hill.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, a 2028 presidential hopeful, headlined the event, receiving the Allyship Award, and delivered the keynote address. During his speech, Beshear sharply criticized President Donald Trump, accusing him of exploiting religion for political division.

Beshear said that Trump tries to sell Bibles but ought to actually read one. Addressing Democratic tensions around transgender rights, Beshear was unequivocal. He said, “Discrimination is never OK. It’s not a bargaining chip so that you can win elections.” He emphasized that inclusion and economic priorities can coexist, urging Democrats to push back against discrimination while addressing broader voter concerns.
