Glenn Close is set to receive an honorary Oscar, ending her distinction as one of the most-nominated actors never to win a competitive Academy Award. The Academy announced the honor for the 79-year-old actor, praising her career and saying: “Throughout her extraordinary body of work, Glenn Close’s unparalleled emotional range has brought to life some of the most complex characters in cinema.” Close earned eight Oscar nominations, including for The World According to Garp, Fatal Attraction, and Hillbilly Elegy, but without a competitive win.
She is an LGBTQ+ ally who portrayed a 19th-century transgender butler in Albert Nobbs and has advocated for casting transgender actors in transgender roles. The Academy will also honor acclaimed filmmaker Ridley Scott and pioneering animator Floyd Norman. Meanwhile, producers Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler, known for queer film landmarks including Carol and Boys Don’t Cry, will receive the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award. All honors will be presented on November 15 at the Governors Awards in Hollywood.
