Jerusalem’s only gay bar, Video Pub, is closing after 14 years, but its owner says the decision reflects changing times rather than a setback for the LGBTQ+ community. Video Pub will be hosting host its final drag show before closing at the end of the month. Owner Avi Goldberger said the venue is no longer needed as an exclusive LGBTQ+ space because broader acceptance has made more venues welcoming.

The bar opened in 2012, providing a safe gathering place before dating apps became common and at a time when queer people often struggled to find accepting public spaces. Goldberger said the venue also became a landmark for LGBTQ+ tourists visiting Jerusalem. The farewell celebration will feature “Allah Nash,” Jerusalem’s only drag troupe. Allah Nash Founder Yossele Ziv, who began performing at Video before moving to a larger venue, reflected on the bar’s role in launching his career. Ziv said, “I took my first steps there.”

Goldberger also blamed years of reduced tourism following the pandemic and regional conflicts as reasons for closing the bar. He said he and his partners will continue operating their other inclusive venues and remain optimistic about Jerusalem’s future.
