Love, loss, and war are hitting the internet hard after gay Navy veteran Dave Lara shared his heartbreaking Vietnam story on The Moth podcast. Lara recalled secretly bonding with two other gay servicemen in 1967, calling themselves “The Group” during a time when being gay could end your military career.
Lara described falling in love with fellow corpsman Matt, only to lose him after a rocket struck his helicopter during a medevac mission. Decades later, Lara still carries Matt’s Zippo lighter as a reminder of their love and sacrifice.
