Tengo que confesar que antes de esta temporada de RuPaul’s Drag Race en Logo, nunca había escuchado el nombre de Bianca del Río, pero rápidamente se convirtió en uno de mis reinas favoritas de esta temporada, y como el final se acerca (a partir de la hora del cierre de esta artículo 5 reinas quedan) Bianca se ha convertido en el favorito obvio. Por supuesto, la decisión final es únicamente en las capaces manos de RuPaul, pero si del Río no gana, va a ser un montón de gente enojada en todo el país, especialmente en la ciudad de Nueva York, donde Roy Haylock, como del Río es conocida en la vida real, ha vivido desde que se mudó de Luisiana después de la destrucción del huracán Katrina. Roy me dijo que se sentía muy afortunado de que él no perdió su casa, pero se vio obligado a abandonar Nueva Orleans, cuando la ciudad fue evacuada. Roy como Bianca es un actor increíblemente sarcástico y divertido que es conocido por su habilidad de burlarse despiadadamente de todas las razas y tipos de personas, incluso él mismo. La mayoría del comentario inapropiado (obviamente) ha editado de Drag Race con el fin de que sea aceptable para la televisión, pero quizás la línea más inapropiada y autocrítico que lo hizo en el aire era “mi madre es cubana y mi padre es de Honduras , así que tengo una po!!a grande, no tengo crédito pero tengo una tendencia de tomar las cosas que no son míos”. Ella tiene un autoproclamado” rolodex de odio “almacenado dentro la cabeza de que puede usar con un preaviso de un simple segundo. Fue increíble tener la oportunidad de charlar con ella y darse cuenta de que ella realmente no toma a sí misma en serio y no es ni siquiera un poco egoísta a pesar de su popularidad y el éxito actual.

¿Ha convertido tu vida en una locura desde el inicio de esta temporada de RuPaul’s Drag Race?

Yo siempre pensé que tenía una vida loca hasta que el programa comenzó. Es que es… es mucho tiempo, las entrevistas y la planificación y … simplemente no se da cuenta de cuánto tiempo que realmente se necesita. Yo sólo tengo la suerte de que me ha sucedido ahora que tengo 38 años en lugar de 20 porque lo puedo digerir ahora. Es un ajuste pero definitivamente no estaba preparado para esto cuando era más joven.

¿Cuánto tiempo has estado haciendo drag?

He estado haciendo esto durante 18 años. Es curioso que el otro día alguien hizo un comentario en una de mis cuentas de redes sociales que decía algo así como “Ah ella es como Phi Phi [O’hara de la Temporada 4 de Drag Race]. Alguien que conozco respondió a ese post diciendo “Yo conozco a Bianca y ella ha hecho drag por más tiempo de que Phi Phi ha tenido los dientes torcidos.

¿Cómo ha cambiado el mundo de Drag desde que empezaste?

Es … en primer lugar, drag ha evolucionado pero en cuanto a RuPaul’s Drag Race, ha traído el espectáculo de drag a las casas de los multitudes. Quiero decir que,el 80% de los comentarios que recibo ahora son de mujeres, pero como todo lo bueno y lo malo, existe la idea en la comunidad de que estamos curando el cáncer … a veces tengo que decirles a estas p^#as “cálmate nena estás simplemente haciendo drag. Eres un hombre con una peluca con y maquillaje no es TAN importante.” Pero en serio, es lo que haces con el. Tienes que conocerte a ti mismo. Crecí en la era Ru, ver el show RuPaul, escuchando Supermodel of the World, y es genial que esto ha sucedido a ella en este momento de su carrera, y que ha sido capaz de dar esta excelente oportunidad para muchos otros drag queens y la comunidad en general. Uno de los principales cambios que he notado es que todos tienen una plataforma ahora y que ha cambiado desde que empecé a hacer drag, quiero decir faceook, Twitter, blogs … Solía ser si uno odiaba a una drag queen, tenía que venir y decírsela a la cara. Ahora, todo el mundo tiene acceso a todas estas personas y puede decir lo que quiera con ellos, que ha cambiado totalmente las cosas.

¿Cómo fue el proceso de audición para los RuPaul’s Drag Race?

Esta fue la primera vez que hice una audición para el show. Yo era un gran fan de la serie, pero nunca vi a nadie como yo en cualquiera de las temporadas anteriores. Fue gracioso cuando se anunció el reparto, la gente tenía mucho que decir, muchos dijeron que estaría primero en salir, pero nunca se sabe. Yo sabía quién era antes de que comenzara el espectáculo, y yo sabía lo que quería poner por ahí para el mundo. Hablé con Ru en el proceso de audición y compartí que yo nunca había visto a nadie como yo, y ella me dijo que era porque nunca hice una audición antes.

¿Qué motivó la mudanza a Nueva York?

Bueno, definitivamente no era el clima, sobre todo después de este año. Te digo que la madre naturaleza ha sido como un homosexual en Grindr; dice una cosa en línea y luego cuando llegue a su puerta, es algo completamente diferente. Yo estaba viviendo en Nueva Orleáns trabajando con disfraces, pelucas y el maquillaje y se convirtió en lo que digo “las esposas doradas;” mucho dinero, pero yo estaba un poco atrapado en ese medio, y luego Katrina destruyó la ciudad, tuve la suerte de que no perdí mi casa y todo lo que tenía, pero tenía que evacuar así visité a amigos en Atlanta y en Nueva York. Mientras estuve allí, yo estaba como, bueno, tal vez esto es lo que quiero, así que lo hice. Después de mudarme, no lo hice drag para el primer año, pensé que había terminado, pero después de un tiempo me aburrí y me dieron un pequeño trabajo. Y es una bola de nieve a partir de ahí.

¿Cuál es tu actividad favorita en Nueva York?

Como el MET (Metropolitan Art Museum) o el teatro, pero es fácil llegar a ser tan involucrado en el trabajo que no prestes atención a lo que te rodea. Muchas veces es ir al trabajo, al bar, a dormir, trabajar, bar, dormir, trabajar en un bar, dormir por lo que es fácil olvidar de hacer las cosas divertidas de Nueva York . Desde Drag Race he estado tan ocupada que ha pasado un tiempo desde que he salido a disfrutar de la ciudad, pero tengo unos días libres pronto así que tengo muchas ganas de simplemente disfrutar de la ciudad.

¿Tienes algún proyecto de cine o de teatro en el futuro?

Estoy haciendo uno de los dos … Estoy planeando / escribiendo un espectáculo de un solo hombre / payaso / mujer que yo quiero hacer en el otoño. Y he estado trabajando con un amigo en la recaudación de fondos para esta película independiente que él ha llamado Huracán Bianca. Es básicamente una película sobre un tipo que es un maestro y es despedido por ser gay. Luego regresa como una mujer y promulga su venganza. La mayoría de la gente no sabe que todavía puede ser despedido en 29 estados por ser gay, así que es una comedia que trae esa cuestión a la luz y con suerte, podemos utilizar este nuevo interés en mí para promover y realizar la película de éxito.

Sé que vas a realizar su espectáculo en Fort Lauderdale en mayo. ¿Vas a estar en otro lugar en la Florida en el corto plazo?

I have to confess that before this season of RuPaul’s Drag Race on Logo, I had never heard of Bianca del Rio, but she quickly became one of my favorite queens to watch, and as the season finale draws near (as of press time of this article, there are 5 queens left) Bianca has become the clear front runner. Of course the final decision is solely in RuPaul’s capable hands, but if del Rio doesn’t win, there are going to be a lot of mad people across the country, especially in New York City, where Roy Haylock, as del Rio is known in the real world, has called home since moving from Louisiana after the destruction of Hurricane Katrina. Roy told me that he was very lucky that he didn’t loose his home, but he was forced to leave New Orleans when the city was evacuated. Roy as Bianca is an incredibly quick witted and funny performer who is known for ruthlessly making fun of all races and types of people, including himself. Much of the inappropriate commentary has (obviously) been edited out of Drag Race in order to make it safe for TV, but perhaps the most inappropriate and self deprecating line that made it on air was “ my mother is Cuban and my father is Honduran, so I have a big d&^k, no credit and a tendency to take things that don’t belong to me.” She has a self proclaimed “rolodex of hate” stored up inside her head and can access it with a mere second’s notice, and it was amazing to get the chance to chat with her and realize that she really doesn’t take herself seriously and is very down to earth despite her current popularity and success.

How crazy has your life become since the start of this season of RuPaul’s Drag Race?

I always thought I had a crazy life until this. It’s it’s it’s time consuming, interview and planning and… you just don’t realize how time consuming it really is. I am just lucky it happened to me now at 38 instead of at 20 because I can digest it now. It’s an adjustment but I definitely wasn’t ready for this when I was younger.

How long have you been doing drag?

I’ve been doing this for 18 years. It’s funny that the other day someone made a comment on social media that was like “oh she’s just like Phi Phi [O’hara from Season 4 of Drag Race]”. Someone I know responded to that post saying “ I know Bianca and she’s done drag longer than Phi Phi’s had a snaggletooth.

How has drag changed since you started?

It’s…first of all drag itself has evolved but as far as the show, it’s brought drag into peoples home. I mean, 80 percent of the feedback I get now is from women, but like everything good and bad, there is this idea that you are curing cancer… sometimes I have to tell these f$%king queens “calm down honey you’re just doing drag. You are a man in a wig with makeup on, I mean… But seriously, it’s what you do with it. You have to know yourself. I grew up in the Ru era, watching the RuPaul show, listening to Supermodel of the World, and it’s great that this has happened to her at this point in her career, and that she has been able to give this golden opportunity to so many other drag queens and the community at large. One of the main changes I’ve noticed is that everyone has a platform now and that has really changed since I started doing drag, I mean Facebook, Twitter, blogs… It used to be if you hated a drag queen, you had to come up and say it to her face. Now, everyone has access to all of these people and can say what they want to them, that has totally changed the game.

What was the audition process like for RuPaul’s Drag Race?

This was my first time auditioning for the show. I was a huge fan of the show, but I never saw anyone like me in any of the previous seasons. It was funny when the cast was announced, people had so much to say, many said I would be first to sashay away, but you just never know. I knew who I was before the show started and I knew what I wanted to put out there to the world. I spoke to Ru in the audition process and shared that I had never seen anyone like me, and she told me it was because I never auditioned before.

What motivated you to move to NYC?

Well, it definitely WAS NOT the weather, especially after this year. I mean Mother Nature has been like some homo on Grindr, it says one thing online and then when it gets to your door, it’s something else entirely. LOL But seriously, I was living in New Orleans working in costumes wigs and makeup and it became what I call “the golden handcuff.” Great money but I was kinda trapped in that environment, and then Katrina happened, I was lucky I didn’t lose my house and everything I owned, but I had to evacuate so I visited friends in Atlanta and in NYC. While I was there I was like, well maybe this is what I want, so I just did it. After I moved, I didn’t do drag for the first year, I thought I was done but after a while I got bored and got a small job. And it snowballed from there.

What’s your favorite NYC thing to do?

It’s NYC, you can do anything. Years ago, I would take once a week to do a NY thing. Like the MET (Metropolitan Art Museum) or the theatre, but you can get so wrapped up in work that you don’t experience what’s around you. A lot of times it’s work, bar, sleep, work, bar, sleep, work in a bar, sleep, so it’s easy to forget to do the fun stuff that NYC is known for. Since Drag Race I’ve been so busy that it’s been a while since I’ve been out to just enjoy the city, but I have a few days off coming up so I am really looking forward to just enjoying the city.

Do you have any upcoming film or theatre projects?

I am doing one of both… I am planning/writing a one-man/clown/woman show that I want to do in the fall. And I have been working with a friend on crowd funding for this independent film that he has called Hurricane Bianca. It’s basically a movie about a guy who is a teacher and gets fired for being gay. He then comes back as a woman and enacts his revenge. Most people don’t know that you can still get fired in 29 states for being gay, so it’s a comedy that brings that issue to light and hopefully, we can use this newfound interest in me to promote and make the movie successful.

I know you are performing in Fort Lauderdale in May, can we find you anywhere else in Florida anytime soon?
