Last year, 500 guests attended DiversiSAFE in Miami. This year, it’s back to Broward: Latinos Salud is bringing the party to Gallery of Amazing Things in Dania Beach.
And it is a party. Don’t call it a gala!
“DiversiSAFE is not just another awards banquet; it’s a high-energy and empowering community event,” says Latinos Salud Board co-Chair Juan Oves, MPH. “The event is part networking social hour, part amusement spectacle, part educational forum, and it all closes with a high energy nightclub vibe,” adds co-founder Rafaelé Narváez.
Both health education and community building are integral parts of the 10-year-old group’s mission. Latinos Salud serves gay Latinos, all persons living with HIV, and everyone who identifies as transgender. Their services include free HIV and STD testing, linkage to health services, life coaching, support groups, and organized social activities.
“We’re out to defeat stigma, homophobia, and most of all, HIV,” says Dr. Stephen Fallon, the agency’s Executive Director. He points out that everyone at the party will go home with the group’s latest DiversiSAFE information pamphlet and asks: “Who says you can’t come for the fun, and leave with a little information?”
