Are you a dog lover? Want to make a difference in a homeless dog’s life? Or is it the homeless dog the one that will come to make a difference in your life? A “Man’s best friend” is a very well-known phrase when it comes to identifying a dog’s loyalty, close relationship and companionship with humans. According to Wikipedia, “Dog is man’s best friend was first recorded as being made by Frederick, King of Prussia (1740-1786).” But, do humans offer the same loyalty to dogs? Most of us do, but unfortunately every day dogs are being dumped, betrayed, abandoned and neglected by their humans…and that is where dog rescues, like ResQMe, come in to help.

Founded in February 2018 and based in South Florida, ResQMe, A Homeless Dog Mission is a 501(c)(3), 100% no-kill non-profit organization created to rescue homeless and unwanted dogs in the South Florida area. Their mission is to rescue homeless and death-row shelter dogs and provide them with veterinary care, vaccines, microchips, spaying/neutering and most importantly, a loving, forever home to live the life they deserve.

“I have always picked up dogs ever since I can remember, and always found homes for them among people I know. One day, I decided to make it an official non-profit organization so I could help even more dogs,” said Raizza Perez, founder of ResQMe.

ResQMe, A Homeless Dog Mission is ran by 4 board members, it’s foster-based, it is in need of volunteers and runs solely on donations. “The most difficult part has been trying to find homes for the large breed dogs that are being abandoned on a daily basis. Most people are looking to adopt that small and cute dog or a puppy,” said Perez.

Some of the dogs available for adoption at ResQMe were picked up from the Redland area, some of them even with a 6 to 8 puppy litter; others were surrendered by owners who no longer were able to take care of their dogs or simply the dog was no longer wanted. ResQMe has also rescued dogs that were left injured on the Miami streets but were found by good Samaritans; they have also saved dogs from death row who need long-term treatment and their latest rescued dog is a senior female, Nutella, who is diabetic, partially blind and walks funny because she was kept in a small cage and was used as a breeding machine. Nutella will need long-term treatment and a special nutritious diet.

So, what is the best part about starting a dog rescue? “We have been extremely fortunate to have found great homes and great parents for each of our dogs and that is very gratifying for us. A homeless dog will always know and will always remember he/she was given a second chance at the life they deserve. A homeless dog will always be thankful, and we see that on a daily basis once they are able to trust a human again,” said Raizza about their adopters and the best part of rescuing a dog. Finding the right “fur”ever home can take days for some dogs or years for the large breeds. “We must be 200% sure a homeless dog goes to the right home, that’s why we visit an average of 3 different homes for each dog so they don’t end up back on the streets.”
