The mayor of Budapest has been indicted for supporting a Pride march, despite Hungary’s ban on public LGBTQ+ events. Prosecutors plan to fine Mayor Gergely Karácsony (Gar-Gai-Kora-Chonee) for promoting Budapest Pride. Karácsony wrote on Twitter, “I was a suspect. Now I’m being accused because I stood up for freedom — my own and of others. Prosecutors are seeking to fine me without a trial for announcing and organizing Budapest Büszkeség ( BYOOSH-keh-shayg).” The charges stem from Hungary’s amended Child Protection Act, which restricts LGBTQ+ visibility. Despite the law, more than 100,000 people attended Budapest Pride last year.
