A Ugandan court has dropped the first case brought under the country’s harsh 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act. The law, signed by President Yoweri Museveni, introduced the death penalty for so-called aggravated homosexuality. According to Reuters, the accused, a young man from northeastern Uganda, had spent nearly a year in custody. His lawyer said the magistrate ended the case after finding the accused to be of unsound mind after a long detention on remand. Rights groups warn the law has fueled widespread abuse. A report by Convening for Equality documented over 300 LGBTQ+ rights violations in 2023.
