A heated debate over transgender athletes and Title IX erupted during a recent meeting of the California State University Board of Trustees. The discussion comes as the California State University system and San José State University are suing the federal government after the U.S. Department of Education accused San José State of violating Title IX by allowing a transgender volleyball player to compete in women’s games between 2022 and 2024.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon reportedly warned the universities they could face funding cuts and a referral to the Department of Justice if they did not comply.
During the meeting, assistant sociology professor Jamie O’Quinn sharply criticized the board, saying, “The fact that I have to get up here and have to say that trans women are women and that’s what I have to use my time to do is absurd. Shame on you. Shame on all of you…Shame on you for using lesbian politics as a front for your transphobia because this lesbian has had plenty of girlfriends with penises.”
