Tennessee Declares June “Nuclear Family Month,” Not Pride Month

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has signed House Joint Resolution 182 designating June 2026 as “Nuclear Family Month,” defining a family as “one husband, one wife, and any biological, adopted, or fostered children.” Critics say the move, timed with Pride Month, excludes LGBTQ+ families. Sponsored by state Representative Bud Hulsey and backed by 15 GOP co-sponsors, the resolution describes the nuclear family as “God’s design for familial structure.”

The resolution passed the Tennessee House 72–18 in April 2025, the Senate 26–4 last month, and returned to the House for final approval before heading to the governor’s desk. It cites controversial claims that links fatherless households to higher rates of poverty, substance abuse, incarceration, and school shootings. The House Joint Resolutin 182 carries no force of law and includes no enforcement mechanism, however, from an LGBTQ+ community perspective, the concern is less about legal impact and more about visibility, dignity, and inclusion.
