On Wednesday, April 23, 2026, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation prohibiting counties and cities from funding or promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. During the signing in Jacksonville, DeSantis characterized DEI as an “ideological construct” designed to advance a specific political agenda at the expense of what he termed “disfavored groups,” explicitly identifying white males as one such group that has faced discrimination.

DeSantis emphasized that individuals should be evaluated based on merit rather than their demographic backgrounds. He stated that while policies to “even the playing field” might be necessary to address specific barriers—like those previously faced by Asian Americans in university admissions—they should not be used to engage in social engineering. The new law introduces strict enforcement measures, allowing residents to sue local governments over violations. Furthermore, local officials found guilty of funding DEI initiatives in defiance of the law risk removal from office, a measure DeSantis described as a means to ensure accountability.

Critics of the legislation argue that the governor is misaligned with the public. Evelyn Foxx, president of the Gainesville branch of the NAACP, dismissed the governor’s claims, asserting that he is “out of touch” and that many white men would not share his perception of being disfavored. Proponents of DEI initiatives maintain that these programs are essential for remedying the effects of long-term discrimination.

This law represents the latest step in DeSantis’s ongoing campaign against diversity initiatives, following previous legislative efforts that restricted DEI spending in public colleges and passed the “Stop WOKE Act,” which regulates how race and sex are taught in educational settings. Democratic lawmakers have expressed concerns that this new legislation is overbroad and potentially unconstitutional.
